Umesh returned with figures of 2-19 on his T20I comeback.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!India fast bowler Umesh Yadav has had to wait a while before getting his turn in the current T20I side. The right-armer has represented India in 37 Tests and 71 ODIs, but has struggled to create an impact in the T20 side, making just his second appearance in the format for his national team, despite having made a debut in 2012.
It did not, however, bring out the jitters or expose the lack of experience in Umesh. The 30-year-old has played 126 T20s after all, and came out of the recently-concluded IPL with impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Playing his second T20I after a gap of nearly six years, Umesh Yadav produced a fine display of fast bowling to take two wickets for just 19 runs, fashioning India’s mammoth 143-run win over hosts Ireland in Dublin. Speaking about the game, Umesh said he was pleased with what he could do on his comeback.
“This is my comeback after five years and I’m very happy with my performance. I enjoyed my game, and kept trying to do whatever I did in the IPL. In the future too I’ll just keep doing whatever I’m currently doing” he said.
Umesh finished IPL 2018 with 20 wickets in 14 games. His impressive average (20.9) and economy rate (7.86) too showed that he had grown as a T20 bowler, and was capable to putting in consistent performances. On Friday, when the IPL performances reaped reward, Umesh underlined his prowess. He effectively ended Ireland’s hopes of pulling off a big chase by sending back the experienced Paul Stirling and William Porterfield early.
“The team is well balanced because of the likes of Bhuvi, Bumrah and even Shami. It’s very difficult to get a chance. But the management is trying to give an opportunity to every fast bowler. I was just waiting for my turn. I was thinking only about the process and giving my 100%. If I keep giving performances like this then it’s a headache for the selection commission, they will see whatever is happening,” Umesh said.
“Whatever we learnt from the IPL, we’re tying to repeat the same thing, and bowl with same plans – weather plan A or plan B. You can’t always go with just one plan. On a flat track, if a plan is not working then definitely we’ll change the plan. We’re going with an aggressive mindset, and want to play good cricket and focus on that. Everyone knows their jobs.”
