Taking charge as the minister for Youth Affairs and Sports from Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Friday, Kiren Rijiju said he would continue from where his predecessor left. The 47-year-old, who regularly posts his workout videos on social media, was upbeat about his new portfolio.
“We will carry forward the work done by the previous minister. We are a team and we all work under the prime minister. I have no qualms in taking suggestions from anyone. In fact, I will be meeting him (Rathore) in the evening. Things from the past should be carried forward and new things should be added if it is good,” Kiren Rijiju said.
The newly-appointed sports minister reached his office at Shastri Bhawan on Friday evening and had a brief interaction with the media followed by a meeting with the ministry officials, including the sports secretary Radhey Shyam Julaniya.
Rijiju said it was a bit early to talk about any immediate plans and goals he had in mind but said the focus would naturally be on preparing for the Olympics.
“I cannot comment on any specifics right now because I am yet to be briefed by the officers. But our focus will be on all sporting events from indigenous sporting events to National Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics. Olympics obviously will be our main target because it is the pinnacle of all sporting events,” the former minister of state for home affairs, said.
