It’s frustrating enough if the tailenders hang in for long. Herath and Dananjaya have now played out the first 70 minutes of the day. And it’s only worse, if they are adding quick runs. They have added 72 already for the last wicket. Such agony!

Rangana Herath and Akila Dananjaya have put on a half-century stand for the last wicket. Should South Africa have gone for the kill last night instead of delaying? Given how the visitors have played spin in the series, these runs, or rather any run, are massive.

Lungisani Ngidi is struggling, and has left the field after hurting his shin. Akila Dananjaya’s straight shot hit him on his follow through. Dale Steyn hasn’t taken the field either. And the last-wicket pair has already added 43 runs – really, really costly. The last-wicket pair of Akila Dananjaya and Rangana Herath have done a superb job to help Sri Lanka past the 300-run mark. More importantly, both the spinners are getting more time to understand the pitch. It is the first a team has scored more than 300 in this series. These are crucial runs.

The conditions are a bit overcast. Keshav Maharaj begins the proceedings for South Africa on Day 2.

Hello and welcome to Day 2 of the second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka. After a strong start in the second Test, courtesy a century stand by the openers, the hosts lost the plot completely and were on the verge of getting bowled out on Day 1. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj was the wrecker-in-chief, bagging eight of the nine wickets to fall on the day.
