The last league game of the Global T20 Canada 2018 didn’t have much resting on it but it served as a good dress rehearsal for the Eliminator, which will see Edmonton Royals and Winnipeg Hawks go against each other once again in a day’s time. Hawks won the game on Wednesday (July 11) though, chasing a 142-run target down with 3.2 overs to spare in an emphatic victory at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City.

Fidel Edwards starred with the ball, picking 4 for 19 to help bowl the Royals out with a ball to go in the stipulated 20 overs. Agha Salman top-scored for the Royals with a 34-ball 43 at the top but the side couldn’t recover from his wicket in the 13th over. Lendl Simmons struck thereafter in his consecutive overs to pick out Kevin O’Brien and Shahid Afridi, and Edwards then did his thing to blow the tail away.

Chasing a rather modest total, the Hawks got off to a super start, putting up 90 for the first wicket. David Warner blazed to 42 off 35 balls with the help of 6 fours and a six while his co-opener Simmons made 38 before retiring-hurt after copping a blow on his thumb from a Mohammad Irfan delivery. But that failed to arrest the momentum as Ben McDermott (18 off 19) first and Mark Deyal (37* off 19) next came to the crease and kept the required rate well under control, thus tailoring an easy win.

Brief Scores: Edmonton Royals 141 in 19.5 overs (Agha Salman 43; Fidel Edwards 4-19) lost to Winnipeg Hawks 142/2 in 16.4 overs (David Warner 42; Mohammad Irfan 1-31) by 8 wickets
