Brazil’s Danilo out of FIFA World Cup 2018 with ankle ligament damage

Brazil right back Danilo has been ruled out of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia ahead of their quarter-final clash with Belgium, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said in a stement.

Danilo suffered an ankle ligament damage in training even being out of action ever since Brazil’s opener against Switzerland.

Danilo, who came into the squad after Dani Alves pulled out of the tournament through injury, suffered a thigh problem against Switzerland and was replaced by Fagner for the other two group games and the Round of 16 match.

The CBF said on its official website that a scan on the Manchester City player had confirmed a ligament injury in his left ankle that ruled him out of the tournament in Russia.

Danilo had asked to remain with the squad and had already begun to have treatment on the injury, the CBF added.

Brazil’s injury woes have not seen an end since Neymar’s injury in February — an injury he recovered from just ahead of the World Cup and was fit enough to feature in all the games till now.

While Neymar has been making good progress through the course of the tournament, forward Douglas Costa had also suffered a right thigh muscle injury during Brazil’s match against Costa Rica.

Costa had come into the match as a substitution and made instant impact as both of Brazil’s goals were scored after he came on the pitch.

However, he suffered a stress and was then unable to feature against Serbia and Mexico.

Even though it was feared that Costa will not be able to get fit in time for the tournament, he has recovered and will be available for selection for the quarter-final against Belgium.

It remains to be seen though if Tite will deem him fit enough to take the pitch.

On the other hand, even Brazilian left back Marcelo injured his back during their group match against Serbia, though it was later revealed that the stress happened due to the mattress in his hotel room.

Marcelo was unable to play in the Round of 16 match against Mexico but will now be available for Tite against Belgium, even as Filipe Luis filled his place well.

Brazil, who are favourites to lift the World Cup for a record sixth time, face Belgium at Kazan Arena on Friday.
