Dinesh Chandimal will remain suspended for Sri Lanka’s Day-Night Test against Windies at Barbados after the ICC appointed Judicial Commissioner, Michael Beloff, rejected the Sri Lankan captain’s appeal against the ball tampering sanction.
Chandimal was found guilty of changing the condition of the ball on Day 2 of the St. Lucia Test in a direct breach of clause 41.3 of the ICC’s Standard Test Match Playing Conditions. For his transgression, Chandimal was levied four demerit points (equal to two suspension points) and was fined 100% of his match fee by match referee Javagal Srinath.
Subsequently, the Sri Lankan captain, along with head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and team manager Asanka Gurusinha, were also charged for a Level 3 offence for “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of cricket” as Sri Lanka refused to take the field for over two hours on the third day of the Test when the match officials ordered for a change of ball and a five-run penalty on the visitors.
A preliminary hearing held to establish the procedural schedule determined that a full hearing for the level 3 charges would be conducted on July 10 with the sanction to follow. If found guilty, Chandimal’s participation in the home Test series against South Africa could be doubtful as all Level 3 breaches carry an imposition of between four and eight suspension points. However, with that hearing scheduled for a later date, “both Hathurusingha and Gurusinha can continue to perform their professional responsibilities,” the commissioner noted.
Beloff, who is also the Chairman of the ICC Code of Conduct Commission, heard the appeal on Friday in a four-hour hearing in which both parties were represented by legal counsel.
With Rangana Herath a doubtful starter, Sri Lanka will likely be led by Suranga Lakmal in the final Test of the series that begins on Saturday (June 23). Windies lead the three-match series 1-0.
