Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Australian pacer Pat Cummins does not want to rush in his recovery from a back injury that has kept him out of action since April.
The right-arm pacer complained of back soreness in the Johannesburg Test during South Africa’s visit to Australia, where he was the stand-out performer with the ball for Australia, bagging 22 wickets in the four-Test series.
Subsequently, scans confirmed that the 25-year-old was suffering from a bone oedema in his vertebrae, which ruled him out of the Indian Premier League as well.
Cummins has been under the constant vigil of the medical staff since then and is doing well with the rehabilitation.
“There’s no guarantees with injury, especially a stress fracture. It’s something you have to be really, really careful with,” Cummins told cricket.com.au.
“If you come back slowly and manage it really well, it’s great. You never have a problem and sometimes the bone comes back even stronger than it was before.
“But if you don’t treat it with respect, it can flare up and that’s when it goes from being one month away from bowling to suddenly having to re-start all over again. We’ll find that balance between getting back and playing and being a little bit cautious. If I’m 100 per cent fit, I’ll definitely be going to Pakistan. There’s no doubt about that.
“It is on track and it’s healing really well, but hopefully it can get there quickly enough and I can start bowling in the next few weeks,” he said.
Cummins has been Australia’s key bowler for a while now. He was their leading wicket-taker in the 2017-18 Ashes as well and his burst as the first change bowler, or sometimes even with the new ball, has kept batsmen honest. He was relentless with his ability to bowl long spells.
His availability for the upcoming series against Pakistan in the UAE in October is doubtful and there is a thought that Cummins, alongside Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood – who also picked injuries in South Africa, could be rested with a full-fledged home series against India, 2 Tests against Sri Lanka and the World Cup in sight. However, Cummins reckoned that they will definitely be going the UAE should they regain full fitness.
“There’s no way we’ll be rested. We’ll only miss out) if we’re still trying to recover from our injuries. If any of us did miss it, it’s great that there’s so much cricket so soon after that and we’ll be fresh and ready to go,” Cummins said.
