Rape is Illegal by law; however, marital rape is not considered a criminal offense. Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi was quoted saying that ‘Concept of Marital Rape can’t be applied in Indian context. Times of India reported 300 rapes and 500 molestation cases were reported in two months from January to February 2015.The National Crime Records Bureau of India suggests a reported rape rate of 2 per 100,000 people, much lower than reported rape incidence rate in the local Indian media.However, Times of India reported the data by National Crime Records Bureau unveiling that 93 women are being raped in India every day.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012. Out of these, 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim (98% of the cases). According to 2012 statistics, New Delhi has the highest raw number of rape reports among Indian cities.
One of the most infamous cases was 2012 Delhi gang-rape case of Jyoti Singh. She was an internee. On 16 December 2012, while travelling with a friend on her way back from the cinema, she was brutally beaten, tortured and gang-raped by six men in a private bus. On 29 December 2012, Jyoti Singh succumbed to internal injuries she sustained during that ordeal.
Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi reported to Lok Sabha that 13,766 cases of child rape were reported to the National Crime Records Bureau in 2014.
India ranked 94th in a statistics of reported rape cases in 2010. In 2015, More than 34,000 cases of rape reported. However, many cases related to rape crimes go unreported due to culture and safety of victims.
