Sussex vs Durham
A commendable bowling performance, resulting in a 16-wicket day, helped Sussex roll out Durham twice on Day 3 to march to an innings and 64-run win in their Division 2 encounter.
David Wiese was the star with the ball in the first innings as he cleaned up Sussex’s tail with four scalps – three of them for ducks – after Danny Briggs kick-started the day with the wicket of overnight’s unbeaten batsman Will Smith. Smith couldn’t add anything to his score of 90, while his team folded after adding only nine more to their end-of-the-day score on the second evening.
With two wickets each, Wiese and Briggs added to Sussex’s woes after asking them to follow-on as the hosts slipped from 61/1 to 137/6. Wicketkeeper-bat Stuart Poynter (84) put up some fight, along with Nathan Rimmington, to frustrate Durham. But once Briggs got a way past that partnership, denying Poynter his century by 16 runs, Sussex collapsed to 277 all out.
Brief scores: Sussex 552 (Philip Salt 130, Tom Haines 124, Michael Burgess 96; Matt Salisbury 3-112, Chris Rushworth 3-116) beat Durham 211 (Will Smith 90, Paul Collingwood 44; David Wiese 4-33, Danny Briggs 3-57) and 277 (Stuart Poynter 84, Graham Clark 49, Nathan Rimmington 49*; Danny Briggs 3-71, Ollie Robinson 2-34) by innings and 64 runs.
Kent vs Warwickshire
An unbeaten 185-run stand between centurion Ian Bell and opener Dominic Sibley has set up Warwickshire for a record fourth innings chase on the final day, in their game against Kent.
With Kent declaring on 446/8, Warwickshire’s target stood at 519. And it didn’t help their case that Harry Podmore struck early to trap Will Rhodes leg before wicket when the team had only 44 runs on the board. However, Bell (102 not out) notched up his third hundred in last four first-class innings, adding 185 for the unbroken second wicket stand with Sibley to frustrate Kent. The partnership meant Warwickshire are left with 290 more to get with nine wickets intact at the start of the final day.
Earlier, Kent resumed their second innings from the overnight score of 359/6 and added 87 more to their total before declaring their innings. The declaration came at the fall of Zak Crawley’s wicket as the middle-order batsman narrowly missed out on becoming the third centurion in the innings.
Brief scores: Kent 197 and 446/8 decl (Sean Dickson 133, Joe Denly 119, Zak Crawley 93; Keith Barker 4-64) lead Warwickshire 125 and 229/1 (Ian Bell 102*, Dominic Sibley 82*; Harry Podmore 1-25) by 290 runs.
Leicestershire vs Middlesex
Ben Raine’s twin strikes put Leicestershire in control as Middlesex slumped to 82/3 at stumps on the penultimate day, chasing 381 in the final innings. Raine had opener Max Holden caught behind off the third ball of the chase, for nought, and then struck late in the day to take out Middlesex captain Dawid Malan for 12 to reduce the visitors to 79 for 3.
Earlier in the day, the hosts did not have a great outing with the bat either, folding up for 186 in their second innings. Neil Dexter, Zak Chappell and Raine scored in 30s but with no substantial partnerships coming through, Leicestershire crumbled to a lowly score. However, the 194-run first innings lead helped them set Middlesex a challenging target. For the visitors, Tim Murtagh and James Harris picked three wickets apiece.
Brief scores: Leicestershire 427 and 186 (Neil Dexter 38, Zak Chappell 37*; Tim Murtagh 3-27, James Harris 3-43) lead Middlesex 233 and 82/3 (Stephen Sean Eskinazi 35*; Ben Raine 2-27) by 299 runs.
Glamorgan vs Derbyshire, Swansea
Usman Khawaja and Kiran Carlson scored brisk, unbeaten half-centuries after a century from Alex Hughes and useful contributions from Matthew Critchley and Gary Wilson had secured Derbyshire a 79-run first-innings lead. Starting the day at 207 for 3 in reply to Glamorgan’s first-innings total of 283, Derbyshire managed to finish with 362. Glamorgan then lost three early wickets in their second innings but an undefeated 153-run stand between Khawaja and Carlson rescued the hosts. They ended the day at 201 for 3, 122 ahead.
Brief scores: Glamorgan 283 & 201/3 (Usman Khawaja 79*, Kiran Carlson 69*; Hamidullah Qadri 2-63) lead Derbyshire 362 (Alex Hughes 103, Matthew Critchley 54*; Andrew Salter 4-105) by 122 runs.
Northamptonshire vs Gloucestershire, Northampton
Resuming the third day’s action, Gloucestershire could add only five runs to the overnight score of 245 for 8 before being bowled out for 250, which meant a target of only 31 runs to win. To add insult to injury, Northamptonshire opener Ben Duckett went hammer and tongs to strike six fours in his 18-ball 32 to finish the chase single-handedly, in four overs.
Earlier in the match, a collective batting display led by Luke Procter, Richard Levi and Duckett took the hosts to 282, after which their bowlers took the lead to bowl the opponents for an embarrassing 62 with Ben Sanderson bagging five and Steven Crook picking up three wickets. Gloucestershire were asked to follow on and notwithstanding Ryan Higgins’ 63 and some late-order cameos, their innings was a mess again at 72 for 5. Brett Hutton accounted for the damage this time as Gloucestershire lost 17 wickets on the day with him picking eight of them in the second innings. However, they managed to put 250 on the board but the first-innings collapse had a telling impact, ensuring the hosts didn’t have to chase too many.
Brief Scores: Northamptonshire 282 (Luke Procter 70; Matt Taylor 4-70) & 32/0 beat Gloucestershire 62 (Ben Sanderson 5-16, Steven Crook 3-11) & 250 (Ryan Higgins 63; Brett Hutton 8-57) by 10 wickets.
