A laceration on his big toe has Australian pacer Billy Stanlake in doubt for the second One-Day International between Australia and England after suffering the cut in the opening ODI of the five-match series
Stanlake’s woes with his toes continued with him having had a similar injury at the start of the summer that nearly also led to the amputation of his left big toe.
“It just started off as an open wound on the top of my toe purely from bowling,” Stanlake told cricket.com.au of the injury he suffered earlier. “It gradually got worse and worse. I couldn’t walk on it, it got pretty serious. I was in hospital for four days and needed surgery.
“I don’t think I was that far off losing it. I think if (the infection) had gotten into the bone or the tendons, I might have been in some serious trouble,” he added. After being ruled out of the Indian Premier League two months ago with a broken little finger, Stanlake returned to the side for the series against England, causing trouble to the English batsmen in the opening one-dayer that Australia lost by three wickets, with his aggressive raw pace. He returned 2 for 44 with the wickets of Jason Roy and Joe Root; while Roy’s stumps were rattled, an edge off half-centurion Root, was taken comfortably.
He, however, remained a mere spectator at Australia’s training sessionon Friday(June 15) at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff ahead of the second one-dayer where coach Justin Langer had his side focus on fitness and fielding.
In the eventuality that Stanlake is ruled out, Jhye Richardson could be brought in as a replacement, whose deceptive pace could be of value to the visitors. However, given that Tim Paine, the skipper, had singled out their top order being responsible for the loss in the first ODI, they may choose to bolster their batting instead, which would leave D’Arcy Short in with the chance of being handed his debut one-day cap.
